What a wonderful week we had with Naomi! Thanks to the PTA for sponsoring her visit!
The librarians worked together this year revising the library curriculum to more closely align with our goals. We work with our teachers to provide opportunities for students to become independent learners and ethical users of the wealth of information available. Librarians integrate learning into the curriculum to support research, helping students learn how to find, evaluate, and use information effectively. The new standards have been updated in Rubicon and linked in appropriate units.
The ASD High School Library has established an Inter-Library-Loan partnership with Georgetown School of Foreign Service Library in Qatar. This offers ASD students, targeted to the IB program the opportunity to borrow books from the SFS Library for short term research assignments. We’ve had several IB students this year take advantage of the partnership.
Although Qatar National Library doesn't have a physical building yet, they have a strong collection of online resources. The ASD Libraries have assisted 115 faculty and parents in obtaining library cards for QLN! Patrons are excited to used both the vast collection of academic resources as well as access to books via Overdrive and magazines on Zinio.

| What is it that librarians at ASD do to promote student reading? That was the question Hind, an ASD graduate who now works for the SEC, brought to us. We hosted a group of local librarians who came to learn about our elementary program, exploring the program we present, integration of skills, and collaboration with teachers. We also shared our policies for children borrowing items and provided time for them to ask questions and explore the primary titles in our collection. |  |

Kathy Patterson, ASD's high school librarian and head librarian for the past seven years, is leaving ASD this year. Not exactly retiring, she's returning to her Minneosta home to figure out what she wants to do next. When Kathy arrived at ASD, she was put in charge of creating a library out of a brand new room full of shelves and furniture that needed arranging and about 7000 old books boxed up under the stairs. Kathy can take credit for the arranging the layout of the MSHS library, developing the organizational systems that are in place, encouraging the development of a K-12 information literacy curriculum, and most importantly, creating a welcoming atmosphere that establishes the library as the heart of the school. Kathy's professionalism, kindness, and sense of humor will be greatly missed at ASD. We wish her well in the next phase of her life! |
