Born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1928, Maya Angelou is an author, poet, historian, playwright, songwriter, dancer, performer, singer, stage and screen producer, director, and civil rights activist. Maya is also known as the first female African American director in Hollywood (Image Quest).
Naomi Shihab Nye is a poet, songwriter, and novelist. She was born to a Palestinian father and American mother. Although she regards herself as a "wandering poet", she refers to San Antonio as her home.
Langston Hughes (1902-1967) was an African-American poet and writer. Although born in Joplin, Missouri, he was a central figure in the Harlem renaissance (ImageQuest).
